The Nigerian Super Eagles defeated South Africa's Bafana Bafana 4-2 in a penalty shootout to advance to the finals of the African Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles were awarded a penalty kick after Victor Osimhen, the African Player of the Year, was brought down inside the box by Mothobi Mvala from South Africa at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake, Ivory Coast.
Nigeria were leading 1-0 in the 67th minute when their captain, William Troost-Ekong, scored a penalty kick by driving the ball down the middle and fooling Ronwen Williams, the goalkeeper.
Nigeria believed they had secured a victory with a 2-0 lead. Osimhen scored by capitalizing on a pass inside the penalty box and launched a precise low strike that went inside the left post. However, upon review by VAR, it was deemed that there was a foul in the build-up play, and the goal was disallowed. Consequently, South Africa was awarded a penalty kick.
South Africa missed a clear chance to win the game as Evidence Makgopa's shot went high over the bar following a rebound from a saved
free-kick.
The game, which entered extra time, saw big chances from both teams.
Moffi was brought down at the edge of the penalty area, and as a result, the South African team received a red card.
Nigeria sealed the game 4-2 in penalties after Nwabali saved two penalties.
Nigeria has made it to the AFCON final as they compete for another trophy with the Super Eagles.
